I’m really excited to be a part of this group exhibition and pleased to be able to exhibit with my father again. My Dad and I had exhibitions in Thunder Bay and Lindsay in 2011 so it’s been a while since we’ve had our paintings displayed together.
The show runs from August 28 to September 27, 2016 with the opening reception on Sunday, August 28th from 2-4pm. Participating artists are Biljana Baker, Gail Backus, Nancy Newman, Doreen Renner, Bruce Stonehouse (my father) and me!
The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is this weekend – August 12, 13 & 14 – and I can’t believe it’s mid-August already. It has been a busy summer and it always goes by way too quickly!
This is my fourth year at this show and it’s always enjoyable. There are so many talented artists with incredible work at this show and the volunteers are great – always helpful and friendly.
The opening night Garden Party on Friday from 7-9pm is my favourite. It’s a real party atmosphere with live music, hors d’oeuvres and cash bar. Garden Party ticket holders get admission throughout the weekend as well. The show continues Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 5pm.
If you are in the area I would encourage you to drop by – it’s worth it!
I will be returning to the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival for my fourth year. I love this show – especially the Friday Night Garden Party and catching up with so many talented artists that have become

My final show for 2016 is Six Degrees of Freedom in Etobicoke at the end of August which also features my father, Bruce Stonehouse. We had father/daughter shows in both Thunder Bay and Lindsay in 2011 and it’s great to have the opportunity to exhibit together again – this time with four other amazing artists!

It’s a crisp, clear day in Western Canada when a float plane makes a bit of a hard landing (a ‘late flare’) into a crystal clear glacial lake deep in the wilderness.
“Late Flare” 24′ X 48″ oil on canvas, Brenda Stonehouse
This painting, a commission for a pilot (who also happens to be my favourite..and only… brother-in-law), was a challenge due to it’s size and the subject matter since it’s quite different from what I usually paint. I’m very pleased with the result and most importantly the pilot is as well!
I started the process with a number of photos that he provided of mountains, trees, lakes and a specific airplane. I did a number of sketches and we agreed on the composition. The size of the canvas was chosen to fit the space above the fireplace mantle in his home.
Once the composition was determined then I started the drawing on the canvas. I wanted to make sure I had the detail of the plane right as it is the focal point of the painting.
With the first layer of paint that goes onto the canvas I try to get an idea for colours and concentrate on the darks and lights. I’m not worried about detail at this point.
With the second layer (and third) I add definition to the edges, deepen the contrasts and add intensity to the colours.
And finally, after many months (another late ‘flair’ if you will) the painting is complete and ready for its new home! I hope you enjoy it Rob & Karen!
My paintings are currently on display at Kawartha Lakes City Hall at 26 Francis St. in Lindsay.
It’s beautiful Victorian architecture is a beautiful backdrop for a gallery! The Mayor has provided the opportunity for local artists to exhibit their work each month. It’s great to have another venue to promote and share our artwork in our community.
City Hall is open to the public Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm and my paintings will be up until November 13. Stop by and take a look!
It’s Buckhorn Fine Art Festival time again! I’m busy putting the finishing touches on things for the show and I’m looking forward to being back at the festival for the third year.
The festival opens on Friday August 14 with the Opening Garden Party from 7 – 10pm featuring hors d’oeuvres and live music to enjoy while you browse through the artists booths. Garden party tickets are available online at www.buckhornfineart.com and also provide you admission throughout the whole weekend.
The show is open Saturday from 10am – 6pm and Sunday from 10am – 5pm. Don’t miss the youth art display, and art competition and the special Artists for Conservation International Exhibit of Nature in Art.
My painting “Always Room for Friends” is featured on the Summer edition of The Link magazine! It is an arts, entertainment and lifestyle magazine distributed in Northumberland, Peterborough, Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. There is also a feature article on me on page 5.
Now that June is here the nice weather has me out in the garden most days. Once again, we are moving gardens – this seems to be an annual event! I have found a bit of time to be in the studio though and have finished a couple of little paintings.
I’ve started a couple new paintings…..one is drawn out and ready to paint and the other I started painting a couple of weekends ago. I love it – a winter scene with all the shadows in the snow and the light through the trees. I’m enjoying this one!
Thank you to my Twitter friend Jerry Holder for the inspirational photograph – this beautiful spot is just minutes away from my house.
I am pleased to have finished the first painting of the year! This one has been around for quite some time so it’s nice to have it completed. It’s 18″ x 24″ oil on canvas – “Algonquin Memories”. I have decided not to do prints of my new work so this is one of a kind!
The past few months have been so busy I haven’t had much time for painting. I was seconded to a new position in September as a Process Improvement Facilitator and have been trained as a Lean Six Sigma black belt. The Globe and Mail published a great article on ‘lean specialists’ that explains the position pretty well. The learning curve has been steep and it has taken all my time and focus to complete the training, but the exam has been passed!
I didn’t make any formal resolutions this New Year but I will be getting back to painting regularly. I will be returning to the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival on August 15 – 17 and the Victoria County Studio Tour on October 4 & 5 and October 11 & 12 so mark your calendars! I’ve been busy this weekend filling out all the forms for those shows and getting everything ready to send off.
My goal is to have 4 new originals to debut at the Buckhorn Festival, so there’s only 3 left to go!
