The portrait that can’t be shown – Day 83

I’ve started painting the portrait that I’ve been commissioned to do. Unfortunately I won’t be able to show you photos of my progress on here because it’s being done as a surprise gift for someone. I suppose I really should be taking photos as I go though so I can show you my trials and tribulations once it’s done!

Portraits have always made me nervous. I’ve done a few of them and they haven’t been too bad but it’s definitely not something I’m comfortable doing. It’s really difficult to capture someone’s personality in a painting and I’m working from a photograph which has its limitations.

I had to get out some reference charts on how to mix up flesh tones. I’m not entirely pleased with the results but it’s giving me the lights and darks to put on the first layer at least. There will be much more refinement in the next layer or two!
