I painted before work today since I had a few meetings booked for this afternoon and knew they would be going late. I got back to the Muskoka chair painting and tackled the shadows. On my reference photo the shadows are just black but shadows are never just black. I did a Google search (what did we ever do before Google?) about painting shadows and found some great resource material.
Shadows usually have a number of colours in them and they can provide an opportunity to add some vibrancy into a painting. Because I have beautiful bright colours in the chairs I decided to keep the shadows pretty simple. I warmed up the brownish colour of the concrete with some cadmium red and a bit of cadmium yellow and then added black for the deep darkness of the shadows. The deep shadows really bring out the colours of the chairs. This painting is getting exciting!
